Catlan was born and raised in Stockton, California.
Catlan is a first-generation, United States citizen. Her parents are refugees and immigrated from south and mid-Vietnam to escape the war-stricken country. As a woman in the first Vietnamese-American generation of her family, she brings a unique perspective to what she writes and how she covers stories.
Asian-Americans are less prominent in the communications world and Catlan believes bringing Vietnamese representation to media outlets is critical for the future of the media industry in order to foster more equity and accurate coverage.
